NOTE

Each tracker's Tracker ID (for example, 39432DAD) is printed on its label. The app reads it automatically when you scan the tracker, so there's nothing to write down.

TIP

A tag's location won't update to this tracker until this tracker is the only one that can see the tag.

Decide on a naming convention before you start, such as Box Truck 01 or Van 02, so your vehicles list stays organized and easy to search.

Step 1: Choose a Location

The tracker needs a clear view of the sky to get a GPS fix and a cellular signal. Where you put it makes the difference between a tracker that reports reliably and one that drops out.

  • Mount it inside the cab, where it has the clearest view of the sky with as little metal as possible between the tracker and the sky.
  • The best spot is above the seatbelt column, next to the driver's shoulder (Figure 4).
  • Do not install it under the dashboard. GPS and cellular signals can't reach it well there, and you won't be able to see the diagnostic LEDs.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can overheat the tracker.
  • Face the clear side of the case where you can see the LEDs and reach the RJ45 port.
  • Plan where the inline fuses will sit: out of the way, but easy to reach if the tracker ever needs to be disabled or reset.

BOX TRUCKS & LARGE VEHICLES

If a metal wall separates the cab from the cargo box, the tracker may not pick up the tags on equipment in the box. These vehicles may need an external RFID receiver connected to the tracker's RJ45 port. Contact Overview Customer Support before you install.

Step 2: Wire the Tracker

Connect the tracker's three leads to the vehicle, then check each connection with a voltmeter before you continue.

IMPORTANT

Tracker wire colors are different from other products. Check each lead against the chart below before you connect it.

Wire Function Connect To
Black Ground A confirmed vehicle ground point
White Constant 12V power A continuous 12V battery source (live with the ignition on or off)
Red Ignition A switched ignition source (live only with the ignition on)

1Connect the black wire to ground

Connect the black lead to a confirmed vehicle ground point.

2Connect the white wire to constant 12V

Connect the white lead to a full-time battery power line, one that stays live with the ignition on or off.

3Connect the red wire to ignition

Connect the red lead to a switched ignition line, one that is live only when the ignition is on.

4Secure every connection

Make sure every connection is clean, tight and secure. We highly recommend soldering and insulating each one.

5Check the connections with a voltmeter

Test each wire. All three checks should pass before you move on.

Wire Measure Ignition ON Ignition OFF
Black Resistance to another confirmed vehicle ground 0 Ω 0 Ω
Red Voltage to ground +12V 0V
White Voltage to ground +12V +12V

If all three checks pass and the LEDs behave as described in Step 3, the tracker is installed and working correctly.

Step 3: Test & Mount

Power up the tracker, confirm the LEDs, and then secure it in place.

1Turn the ignition on and wait

Turn the vehicle's ignition on. After about five minutes, check the LEDs against the chart below. Each LED is labeled on the circuit board.

Tracker LEDs labeled Tag, Cell, Error, Status and GPS

Figure 5: Tracker LEDs when the tracker is connected and working

LED Color When It's Working Correctly
Cellular Blue Turns off once the tracker connects to the cellular network.
GPS Red Turns off once the tracker gets a GPS fix.
Error Amber Blinks every 4–5 seconds while the tracker monitors itself for issues.
Status Green On when the tracker has power. When the ignition is turned off, it turns off after 10 seconds and comes back on after another 10 seconds.
Tag Green Flashes when it detects a tag's beacon from equipment. Flashes rapidly when many tags are nearby.

2Turn the ignition off

The green Status LED should turn off after 10 seconds and come back on after 10 seconds. This confirms the red wire is connected to the vehicle's ignition.

After one hour, the tracker enters low power mode, where it stays until the vehicle is started and moved. Low power mode is indicated by all LEDs turning off.

If the Status LED doesn't go off, see “The LEDs stay on” under Troubleshooting.

3Mount the tracker and reassemble

Secure the tracker in the location you chose, with the LEDs visible. Keep the inline fuses out of the way, but easy to reach in case the tracker needs to be disabled or reset.

Replace any panels or trim you removed during installation.

Step 4: Register the Tracker in the Mobile App

With the tracker installed, register it from the vehicle. When you're done, the tracker is linked to that vehicle in Overview and tracking can begin.

Tracker & LEDs

Issue What to Try
No LEDs turn on. Turn the vehicle on and check for loose or poor connections and blown fuses.
The LEDs stay on more than 60 minutes after the ignition is turned off.

The red wire is connected to battery power instead of ignition.

  1. Move the red wire to the vehicle's ignition line.
  2. Turn the ignition on and wait at least 10 seconds.
  3. Turn the ignition off. After 10 seconds, the green Status LED should go off for 10 seconds, then come back on.

If it doesn't go off, the red wire still isn't on the ignition line.

The blue Cellular LED stays on or keeps blinking.

The tracker can't get cell reception.

  1. Move the vehicle outside under open sky.
  2. Remove the fuses on the white and black wires.
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then put the fuses back in.
  4. Turn the ignition on.
  5. Wait up to 5 minutes for the Cellular LED to turn off.

If it still doesn't connect, the area may not have adequate cell coverage. Contact Customer Support to check coverage or for a cellular outage.

The red GPS LED stays on.

The tracker can't get a GPS fix.

  1. Move the vehicle outside under open sky.
  2. Remove the fuses on the white and black wires.
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then put the fuses back in.
  4. Turn the ignition on.
  5. Wait up to 5 minutes for the GPS LED to turn off.
The amber Error LED stops blinking and stays on.

This is usually caused by overheating. If the case is hot to the touch, move the tracker to a cooler location and let it cool.

  1. Remove the fuses on the white and black wires.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then put the fuses back in.
The green Status LED is blinking.

The vehicle battery voltage is low:

  • Blinking quickly: below 10V (but above 8V).
  • Blinking slowly: between 10V and 11V.

Check that the vehicle's battery has the proper voltage.
